In one of many surprise announcements from President Trump, he announced late last year that he wanted a new branch of the military: a Space Force. The new wing of the armed forces would have been responsible for protecting, defending, and projecting power in the final frontier. It made a splash and Americans were abuzz over the developments.
But now, in another setback for President Trump, Space Force gets seriously watered down in the latest itineration.
Acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan, who took over for General Jim Mattis after his resignation over the hasty withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, said he thinks the Space Force should just be part of the Air Force.
Apparently, the Defense Department is trying to make the Space Force proposal more palatable on Congress, though it comes at the expense of Trump’s lofty goals for space exploration and putting his mark on the military in an unorthodox way.
